A $500 deposit is due upon registration. You will be required to pay the remaining balance by June 1, 2019. After June 1, full payment is due upon registration. You must submit the required payment with your registration form in order to be enrolled in the Summer Symposium.
2019 Summer Symposium at University of California, Berkeley
At the 2019 Golandsky Institute Summer Symposium at University of California, Berkeley, participants will attend lectures, master classes, technique clinics, and other presentations by Edna Golandsky and the Institute’s expert faculty, all of whom have undergone years of rigorous training to qualify as teachers of the Taubman Approach. The performers and pedagogues of the Golandsky Institute’s faculty work with pianists, teachers, and musicians of all ages.
In addition to private lessons, supervised practice time, and interactive technique clinics, the 2019 Golandsky Institute Summer Symposium offers a variety of presentations, lectures, and master classes by faculty and special guest presenters.

We will also be posting more detailed information on our website about event locations and program content as it becomes available. Please make sure that your spam controls do not prevent our emails from reaching you. If you have supplied us with an email address, we expect any communication sent to that address to reach you.
Because so much advance planning goes into our Summer Symposium, we must ask all participants to notify us in writing in the event of cancellation and to abide by the following terms of our Cancellation Policy, which is strictly enforced:
a) The deposit of $500 is refundable upon request until June 1. After this date the deposit is not refundable.
REMINDER ABOUT DINING THIS YEAR:
The fee includes daily lunch for resident participants in the university dining facilities. All participants can purchase any other meals in the dining hall with a credit card on a per meal basis. We will be using the Crossroads Dining Hall: 2415 Bowditch Street (https://caldining.berkeley.edu/locations/dining-commons/crossroads).
The prices for dining hall meals are: Breakfast: $10.75; Lunch: $12.95; Dinner $15.50.
All meals are cafeteria style and all you can eat.
WHERE WE ARE:
Symposium and Festival events will be held in two campus buildings all within walking distance of one another. We anticipate that master classes and lectures will be held in Hertz Hall and private lessons will be given in Morrison Hall, home of the Music Department.
The campus is mostly wireless, and you will be able to use an area network to connect your own computer to the internet.
Participants may not receive mail at Berkeley while attending the Symposium.
Guests can purchase on their own or the school can sell weekly Rec passes for $75.00 each.
A gentle stretching and exercise class open to all participants will be held from 7:00 to 7:45 every morning. It will be lead by Jim Cleaver.
All beds will be made up with linens and towels. Rooms will not be cleaned during your stay but common bathrooms will be cleaned daily.
We have some participants with allergies and asthma. Please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne, as these may cause problems for others.
USEFUL ITEMS TO BRING:
If you prefer not to stay in the dorm, you may make arrangements at a nearby hotel. The Berkeley Graduate Hotel will give us a discounted rate of $199 per night this year for a single room. This price does not include applicable taxes.

We also have a group rate at the nearby Bancroft Hotel for $149 per night. This hotel does not have an elevator. (reservations [at] bancrofthotel.com) Reservations in both hotels are limited to just a few rooms.
You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements to Berkeley. For those flying in, the closest airports are Oakland, CA and San Francisco, CA.

UNIT 3 RESIDENCE HALL INFO & POLICIES:
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE:
The arrival date is Sunday, July 28. There will be a short orientation meeting that evening. The Symposium starts the following morning.
The departure date is Saturday, August 3. The program will end after the last presentation on Friday afternoon. Plan to depart by noon on Saturday morning by 11:00 am. You will not be able to occupy your dorm room after this time (no exceptions will be made). Please organize your travel arrangements accordingly.
Check-in for Symposium participants residing on campus will be between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 28. The location for check-in will be at the front desk of our dormitory, Unit 3, 2400 Durant Avenue (https://housing.berkeley.edu/unit3). Rooms will not be ready for occupancy until 2:00 PM.
If you are arriving after 11pm, please notify Deborah Cleaver, jdcleaver [at] comcast.net in advance so accommodations can be made.
Our first event will be a short orientation meeting at 7:00 PM on Sunday, July 28 for all participants. It will take place in Hertz Hall.
Commuting participants are encouraged to come on July 28 as well. You will be able to obtain your information packet, a parking permit, and access cards to the buildings we use at the check in location.
INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT REGISTRATION:
When you arrive you, will receive housing information, a complete calendar for the Symposium, a personal daily schedule including practice times and locations, and other pertinent information about the Berkeley community.
Any information packets not picked up at registration on Saturday will be at Hertz Auditorium before 10:00 AM on Monday morning.
BOOKLET OF MUSICAL EXAMPLES:
Until 2005, we supplied booklets of musical examples to all participants. If you attended the Symposium in the years from 2005 through 2018, you already have a current example booklet and will be expected to bring it back with you. The Institute will supply booklets free of charge for new participants. Returning participants will be able to purchase a replacement copy of the booklet for $25 if supplies permit. It would be helpful if you would let us now well in advance if you need a new example book.
TECHNIQUE CLINICS, BREAK-OUT GROUPS AND SUPPORT GROUPS:
Participants will be able to choose whether to attend technique clinics devoted to solving passage problems in the traditional literature. The clinics are interactive and we invite you to bring your own passage problems for discussion.
Returning participants will attend sessions that spotlight particular excerpts from the repertoire. Following the discussion, there will be interactive break-out groups where participants get hands-on attention from faculty members.
Support group sessions under trained leadership will also be available for participants. The group helps challenge the notion that physical limitations, injuries, and pain result from individual defects or failings. The group is able to tap into the vast experience of its members to show how universal these feelings are and to provide strategies for moving ahead and retraining.
